Mary Magdalen
Mary Magdalen is depicted here in statue form holding a chalice.
There is confusion in the Christian literature over Mary Magdalen's true identity and significance. There seems to be consensus that the historical Mary of Magdala was a devoted disciple of Jesus. She was present at the Crucifixion and a witness to his resurrection. She is sometimes considered to be the same Mary as Mary of Bethany, a female 'sinner'. She is considered to be a symbol of repentance. Some scholars have suggested Mary Magdalen was a leader in the early Church. Some modern writers have proposed that Mary was the wife of Jesus, possibly traveling with him to Kashmir, where they spread the gospel and raised a family.
Who knows? She is presented here as Mary Magdalen, 'Lady of the Labyrinth'.
