Price: $14.00

This statue shows Hanuman, one of the most well-known of the Hindu gods. There are many temples devoted to him in India. Many stories are told about him and his superhuman powers and his ability to change shape at will, which derive from his celibacy. Hanuman is considered to be a god of power and strength. As the greatest devotee of Rama, he is cherished as a symbol of total, selfless service.

Hanuman is the son of Vayu, the Lord of Winds, and Arijana, a female monkey whom Vayu seduced. When only ten years old, Hanuman could lift hills that were many miles in circumference and could throw them like stones. One of the great services of Hanuman was to fly to the Himalayas to bring back herbs with which to cure Rama and his brother when they had been mortally wounded.

In addition to having magical healing powers, Hanuman acts as the protector of towns and villages, wrestlers and acrobats. He is famous for being an exemplary devotee and for being knowledgeable in grammar and sciences.

This image shows Hanuman in a devotional posture, as he would be before Rama and Sita.
