This resin sculpture depicts the Virgin of Guadalupe, the most honored Christian saint in Mexico.
The Virgin appeared in a vision to Juan Diego near Mexico City in 1531. She told him to build a church there, where one to an Aztec goddess presently stood. She said she was the Mother of all who dwelled in the land.
Several miracles are attributed to the Virgin of Guadalupe. In 1750, she was declared the Patroness and Protectress of New Spain. Her feast day is December 12.
